- : Also at Cebit, Escom is unveiling a prototype of a new Amiga model
- : that should be in stores in September and will include a Pentium-speed
- : processor and CD-ROM drive. Depending on cost, a modem may be added.
- : Amiga Technologies President Petro Tyschtschenko says he wants to price
- : the model below 1,000 marks, or less than half the price of a similarly
- : equipped PC. But company officials maintain their biggest splash will be
- : a PowerAmiga, using Motorola Inc.'s PowerPC chip, expected to be

- The new Amiga (Walker) including a Pentium-speed processor? Is this a
- major flub, or did they get some 'secret' info that will likely make many
- Amigan's quite happy... especially if its all under 1,000 marks ($715 US).
-
- If they have only an EC030/40MHz model Walker, it will be hardly Pentium
- speed. On the other hand, an 060/50 or 060/66 is in the Pentium range.
- Either the article author assumed they would go for a fast CPU, or they
- found out something that AT hasn't generally made known, or most likely
- it is simply bad information.
-
- I, personally WOULD buy the Walker with an 060 and Quad CD-Rom and the rest of
- it for $800 US in a heart beat. I don't think I am the only one.
-
- If they can produce the thing for $300-$400 (their cost) dollars, this could
- be a winner for them. A mear 5000 sales with a $200 dollar profit margin
- would net AT One Million dollars above production costs. Other than the odd
- looks of the Walker (will this be improved?), this could just work.
-
- Lets all hope that AT has a surprise for us. At the VERY least, I would
- hope that AT plans to produce their own (with Phase 5) 060/50 or 060/66
- CPU card for the new Walker in quantity, and sell them at a reasonable
- rate.
-
- If the EC030/40 goes for $715 or so, and the new accelerator card could
- be sold for $505, a reasonable $1,220 for a Pentium 66Mhz+ speed Amiga system
- w/o Monitor is excellent, especially since it can be upgraded modularly to
- include extra slots and become tower-like.
-
- I personally wish they intended to use a full 68030 with MMU and include a
- socket on the motherboard for the FPU. Maybe there is still hope.
-
- I had hoped that they would put a 68040 into the new system to allow for
- faster programs which lag on 68030's, and because the 68040 and 68060
- code is much similar compared to 68030 code, and it would be good to
- encourage programming for the faster CPU's, rather than having everything
- seemingly 030 optimized and then lagging on faster systems.
-
- Any specific information on how the modular aspects of the new Amiga work?
